Coconut Chip

Coir chips, also known as coco chips, are small pieces of coconut husk that are used to regulate aeration and moisture levels in potting soil or coco peat. They are a sustainable, environmentally friendly alternative to traditional growing media and are popular with growers of orchids and anthuriums.

Coir chips are made by soaking coconut husks in water for several months to soften them, then separating the pith and fiber and cutting the husks into chips. The chips can be 1–2 cm or larger depending on the purpose. They are often washed with fresh water to reduce sodium levels.

Coir chips can be mixed with potting soil or coco peat in different proportions to maintain humidity for plant roots and adjust aeration. They have excellent moisture retention and aeration properties, and can last for more than four years, which is longer than cane and straw mulches.
